Thursday, June 4th: PJ Day and Bicycle Day

Mike and I thought it would be fun to have a pajama day and a bicycle day all in one. That means, your morning should be easy! Simply send your child to school in their pajamas!!!! Your child is invited to bring along his/her favourite story and stuffed animal. If you are sending your child’s bicycle to school, please remember to send a helmet as well.

Head Lice

Dear Families,

We have become aware of a few cases of Head Lice in our school. As a precautionary measure we are asking your assistance to take the time to do a thorough head check of your child/children.

If you discover your child has Head Lice, please inform the school so that we can take precaution and inform other families to do a check.

We greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter,

Yours truly,

The Kindergarten Team

April Update

April showers bring May flowers…not this year. Perhaps it will be May showers bring June flowers!

With the muddy weather on its way out, the playground continues to be really wet, please remember to pack extra pants, socks, and splash gear for your child.

During April, we continue to explore a variety of topics.

Reading: Our literacy block continues to be a busy time in the classroom. All of the children look forward to reading and writing stories. The children continue to enjoy reading books from our library collection and personal book bins. We even have some year one students who have started to read. Way to go everybody! Most recently, we have practicing retelling a story after we listen to a read aloud. We are remembering the characters and what is happening in the beginning, middle, and the end!

Math: We have been focusing on Subtraction this month.  We have been using the terms “fewer than, left over, altogether” when talking about our math problems.

Science:  We continue to investigate plants and living things. We also did some planting after reading Chrysanthemum. Our plants are beginning to sprout. We are looking forward to documenting their growth in our Science notebooks.

Art: We have been experimenting with water colour paints, using shapes in our drawings, and making masks. The children have been using their imaginations to create masks using a variety of materials.

Please continue to check your child’s blog. There may be some new pictures or samples of their work.

November Update

holly7

It’s hard to believe the end of November is already here! We are now getting ready to celebrate the holidays and looking forward to the upcoming Christmas concert and Gingerbread House activities!! With the colder, wetter weather we are asking families to please send extra socks and mitts with your child so they can stay dry throughout the day and have warm mittens to wear home.

Here is a look at what has been happening in our classroom:
We are now involved with gingerbread and Christmas activities. We are reading many different versions of The Night before Christmas and The Gingerbread Man, working with delicious smelling play dough, and making gingerbread cookies next week!

Reading/Writing: The children continue to read and write daily. A lot of their writing ideas come from our read alouds and discussions. Please continue to read with and to your child at home. It is important to ask your child a few questions when you have finished the story.
Here are a few prompts:
What do you think happens next?
What was your favourite part of the story?
I wonder why…

Math: We have been focusing on number sense this month. We have been using the terms more, less, and equal (same) when comparing items. We are also investigating patterning and design concepts. It would be great if you could practice these skills at home. For example: Give some items to your child and yourself and ask who has more (or less). Have them explain how they know. Ask your child “how many do you have? If I give you 2 more (or take 2 away) how many will you have? Take a look around your home for any patterns on animals, clothing, walls etc.

*We look forward to seeing you at our Holiday celebration on the 10th of December. Please watch for a letter about this celebration coming home soon.

**Remember you are welcome to come in and visit the classroom anytime!
